Springtime Simple and Safe Outdoor Exercise for Older Adults

Updated: Apr 7

For seniors, exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to be beneficial.

WALKING is a secure and beneficial form of exercise for older adults. Whether it involves a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood, a walk in the park, or a lap around the outdoor section of a mall, walking improves cardiovascular health and joint flexibility. Start with shorter distances, progressively extending both time and speed as comfort levels increase.

GARDENING merges gentle physical exercise with a sense of tranquility. Activities such as watering plants, pruning, or planting flowers promote movement and foster a feeling of accomplishment. Utilizing raised garden beds or container gardening can enhance accessibility for elderly individuals with restricted mobility.

PATIO CHAIR EXERCISES: For elderly individuals with restricted mobility, engaging in chair exercises outside is an excellent option. Basic movements such as leg lifts, arm circles, and seated marches provide the opportunity to enjoy fresh air while remaining active. Utilizing a sturdy chair placed on a level surface guarantees safety.

BALANCE EXERCISES: Gentle stretching improves flexibility and alleviates stiffness. Engaging in stretches in a shaded environment can enhance the enjoyment of the routine. Balance exercises, like standing on one foot while grasping a stable surface, can aid in fall prevention. It is advisable to supervise these exercises if there are concerns regarding balance.

While outdoor activities offer many benefits, safety is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

  • Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing.

  • Exercise during cooler times of the day to prevent overheating.

  • Hydration is key before, during, and after exercise.

  • Wear well-fitting, supportive shoes to minimize the risk of falls.

  • Avoid uneven surfaces that may increase the risk of falls.

  • Please cease exercising if dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual fatigue occurs. Consult a doctor if persistent.

Enjoy springtime and get moving!
